"Of Arms and the Law" is a new website that deals with the 2nd Amendment from a legal and historical viewpoint.

Former law enforcement officer Hoff says, "... guns save innocent lives far more often than they kill. Law enforcement documentation also indicates that there are over two million lives saved by guns each year (facts, never disclosed in the local or national media). ... many anti self-defense advocates say that they only want “reasonable restrictions“ ..." "Hoff says it well. I wish my words were as compelling." - your webmaster.

Shooting Ranges

The Rangers and volunteers on occassion hold a "clean up" at Orosco Ridge. Much trash is removed. We all ask that when you use Orosco Ridge to please remove shells, trash and debris from your shooting area. Keeping Orosco Ridge cleaned up is essential if we want to keep this shooting area open. Thank you.

Gate code changes from time to time..

Call the Ranger Station to check the status at Orosco Ridge. Call 619-593-2183 for updates on the fire danger levels. There is always the Southbay Rod and Gun Club if you just need to shoot.

Check the links below for weather predictions and weather conditions in the Ramona area. Call the number below (during business hours) to find out if Orosco Ridge area is open for shooting. Showers can cause Orosco Truck Trail to be closed. Traffic on Orosco Truck Trail can cause damage and erosion to the dirt road when it is wet. Wet conditions may also make the road unsafe. After rainy weather Rangers will make the determination on Saturday and Sunday mornings as to whether Orosco Truck Trail to the shooting area will be open. Please Call 760-788-0250 for updates and gate code. (Recorded message does not give the open or closed status of the shooting range. Wait for operator.) Operator is only available Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Please call your webmaster if you have current information about the open or closed status or other conditions at Orosco Ridge: 619-575-0133.
Shooting is permitted only during daylight hours.
Only 3 types of targets may be used: Paper, Metal knock down and Metal spinners.
The first .7 miles of Orosco Truck Trail is on private property. You will need to travel about 3 miles up Orosco Truck Trail from the gate before the marked shooting area is reached. Check signs and brochures for more details.
If it has rained in Ramona in the last couple of days it is likely Orosco Ridge will be closed.

Winds tend to dry out Orosco Truck Trail.
Recently a fallen tree blocked the road to Orosco Ridge for several days. Safety conditions, fire hazard, erosion and clean ups can cause closure of the shooting range for the day.
Please take a trash bag with you to keep the forest litter free. Thank you.

NRA members and other gun enthusiasts are needed to volunteer at the gate to Orosco Ridge. It is an enjoyable duty and helps to keep the public informed and citation free and to preserve target shooting at Orosco Ridge. The volunteer training session on June 18, 2005 increased our volunteer base but we still need more volunteers. Call the Ranger Station 760-788-0250 ext. 3325 for more details.

The Cleveland National Forest is patrolled by Rangers and other Law Enforcement personnel.
