NRA - URGENT ACTION ALERT!
LONG BEACH GUN BAN
Even though a fifty caliber firearm has never been
used to commit a crime, and although law enforcement officials
admit that these firearms are undesirable to criminals, on Tuesday,
November 4, 2003 the Long Beach City Council will vote on an
ordinance that would ban the sale of these primarily single action
target and big game hunting rifles and handguns. The ordinance
even bans all "transfers," so even temporarily letting
a friend hold one of these firearms would be a crime. See: http://www.ci.long-beach.ca.us/filenet/Agenda_frames.asp
This is NOT a local issue. This proposal is being advanced as
part of an effort to pass the same law in other California cities,
and at the state and federal level. This effects you, even if
you do not live in Long Beach! Because of this attempt to have
statewide influence, you have the right to be heard from wherever
you live!
This proposal is the latest effort from the gun ban lobby to
incrementally attack the right to choose to own a gun. If they
succeed in using this rationale to ban a hunting and target gun
that has never been criminally misused, that same rationale can
be used to progressively ban less powerful rifles, about which
similar distortions can be made. Proponents have sought to characterize
this proposal as a terrorism prevention measure. Characterizing
the fifty caliber rifle as a terrorist tool is nothing but shameful
political opportunism. A fifty caliber rifle would be pea-shooter
for terrorists. And, NRA has discovered that there are only three
licensed gun dealers left in Long Beach. Those remaining retailers,
who can easily be monitored by the Long Beach Police Department,
do not stock and have not sold fifty caliber rifles. So the ordinance
will accomplish nothing other than to turn target shooters into
criminals.
Please join us in fighting this proposal. The City Council,
particularly the swing voters identified in bold below, needs
to hear from you. Visit our Opposition Headquarters website at:
