IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

SB682 has now passed the State Senate and has joined AB496 on the Governor's Desk. Both of these bills seek to repeal part of the Civil Code 1714 that deals with product liability.

These bills were redrafted and gutted/amended from bills that were initially introduced to do other things. These bills were changed after the anti-gun advocates lost their "101 California Street lawsuit" against the firearms industry in the California State Supreme Court.

The repeal of current law would only open the door of litigation to the manufacturers of lawful and legal consumer products. Manufacturers of lawful products should not be held responsible for the actions of criminals or any person who uses the product in a negligent manner.

Let Governor Davis know that you want him to VETO both AB496 and SB682.

Look at the letter (in PDF format) from the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufactures' Institute (SAAMI) for some great talking-points for use when you communicate with the Governor's Offices.

LOCAL LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

L.A. City Council Attempts to Ban Hunting/Self-Defense Ammo
The Los Angeles City Council will discuss a proposed ordinance to ban shotgun, rifle, and handgun ammunition commonly used for sporting and self-defense purposes. This discussion is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 3, 2002. City Council members proposing this measure have no evidence that this type of ammunition is favored by criminals, which is why hunters, target/competitive shooters, gun owners, and sportsmen should contact the council members and let them know that this ordinance will only impact law-abiding hunters and sportsmen. You can view the text of the proposed ordinance in this PDF document.

You can send a single email to each of the Los Angeles City Council Members by CLICKING HERE . By sending one email to that address, each one of the city council members will receive a copy of your message (so it is probably a good idea to address your messages with: Dear Council Member,).

Call, fax and email them. Let them know that you want them to OPPOSE THE AMMO BAN!!!
