Legislation: AB 992 (Ridley-Thomas) - Ammo Tax - This bill would have levied a tax on the sale of ammunition of 10 cents on every cartridge sold at retail to fund a "Victims Reimbursement Fund." AB992 failed to get enough votes on the Assembly Floor and was moved to "inactive" status. GOOD JOB! We can expect to see AB992 come back next year (as a "two-year bill"). SB489 (Scott) - Semi-Auto Handgun bill - would require that all semiautomatic handguns, manufactured after a specific date - that are imported and sold in California, be equipped with a loaded chamber indicator and a magazine disconnect mechanism. SB489 has passed the Senate and now is in the Assembly Public Safety Committee. It is scheduled for a vote on July 1st. TAKE ACTION TO OPPOSE! See "Action Requested" below. SB601 (Perata) - .50 Caliber Handgun Ban - would have banned sale/possession of .50 caliber handguns. This bill was aimed specifically at the new S&W .500 Magnum cartridge but would have also banned others. SB601 is still in the Senate Appropriations Committee and was moved to "inactive" status. GOOD JOB! We can expect to see SB601 come back next year (as a "two-year bill"). Action requested: Your voice is being heard in the Capitol. Please continue to CALL, FAX, and EMAIL the legislators. All three methods of communication are effective and we must keep up the broad-based effort. The NRA recognizes the efforts that firearms owners have made to defend their Second Amendment freedoms and these efforts are appreciated. But as long as there is a legislative threat we will continue to keep you informed and ask you to contact the legislators in the Capitol and in the District Offices. Together, we have made a difference. Note: Please notice that since AB50 and SB489 have cleared their respective "houses of origin" they have now been sent to the other legislative house to work their way through the process.
