M. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED SB1490 (Perata) would give local officials, such as district attorneys, city attorneys, etc. access to California Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) information. The access to the DROS database should be limited to law enforcement agencies. The idea of allowing the unrestricted access to the DROS database by city attorneys who are pursuing exploratory civil actions would violate the privacy of firearms purchasers. There are no provisions in SB1490 to keep the information private and out of the hands of persons that would abuse it. This information could then be used for "civil litigation" against citizens. SB1490 is scheduled to be heard in Senate Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, April 2, 2002. ACTION: Please contact the members of the Senate Public Safety Committee and voice your opposition.
